it was some time in 1994 when i first heard about steve vai. his name was used in the same sentence as "frank zappa", followed by nouns like "virtuoso" and adjectives like "unconventional". i just had to check him out. i bought "passion & warfare", which was a good introduction to his music. (i would have not been ready to digest the denser material then available: the zappaesque "flex-able" and the peculiar "sex & religion"). from the cover, to the music, to the insert notes, everything about that album fascinated me. i was hooked. steve's music colors my life. i consider him the musical version of byron, for his ability to dissect the human soul and reveal its very core. his music has been the backdrop for hookups and breakups; it has inspired me; it has carried me through difficult runs. i'd been toying with the idea for a while, and a couple of weeks ago i finally consummated it: i found a partner in crime 🙂 and we both went to a tattoo shop and got inked. ha! i now carry the "vai" symbol under the skin on my left arm. sweet!

After seeing his show in Salt Lake City on April 20, 2005, I decided that I wanted to get a tattoo related to that to beauty of that night, my youth, etc... I took in the shirt I purchased at the show, the Real Illusions album cover, and a sketch I had drawn showing what I wanted the design to look like for the tattoo arist to get a feel for it. The artist and I sat down and took the elements of the album cover and drew a design that would look perfect on my foot. I chose this particular image because it symbolises the alienation one can experience by feeling a love for art (dude, you're so deep!!) and music over tractors while living in a small country town where the men are men and the sheep are nervous... "What's up ... my Name is Guido Marquardt and I am from Oldenburg near Hamburg in Germany.
Yes it was a fantastic evening. After the Show in Hamburg 2001 in a Club called Fabrik (the greatest show I've ever seen) Steve signed my tattoo with a black marker. 20 Hours in a hotel - no soup - and now is the time to tattooing at my favorit Tattoo Artist "Witchy" (he makes my Ultra Zone Tattoo) and now I am very proud of this Tattoo.
I saw Steve live at the first time in 1993 in Bremen on the Sex&Religion Tour, then 1996 in Hamburg on the G3 Tour, 2000 Ultra Zone in my favorit Club Grosse Freiheit on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg, and last Year Ultra World in the Fabrik. Steve is for more as 15 Years on my side. He is the worldbest Guitarplayer....!"
