Happy holidays to all. There have been discussions on topics similar, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am trying to figure out what to get my 18 year old son for Xmas in terms of recording for him to mess around with.
I looked at the Tascam DP-004 & 008 for recording to an SD card. 4 channel and 8 channel respectively but pretty basic for $199 to $299.
There is also software like Guitar Pro 5.1 or Pro tools, Steinberg, etc. for less. I have been told that software is the way to go, and I am leaning towards that. Any opinions are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks Patill. I think you opened my eyes to lok a little closer. Perhaps I looked too quickly. Guitar Pro 5.1 is tab writing software. And even though I knew that Pro tools was pricy, I didn't realize quite the whole picture!
I did a brief search and I think this is the sort of thing I am looking for and the price seems in the right ball park.
Any opinions based on this tack are appreciated.

used for direct recording of guitar to PC ,comes in w/ ableton live lite 6 & riffworks w/c is a good thing since when you get to buy their hardware, it comes w/ a free DAW.. all for around $150 ,not bad.. w/ regards to using DAW, you really need to read a lot, i'm still getting used to using ableton so these DIY music softwares do require some patience.. but that would be another topic

this POD thing is new, isn´t it?
Actually, I´d go for that. I have a POD here, too and actually it gives you a studio guitar sound that can not be differed from a miced amp, so that´s the absolute way for a beginner. I´ve had the POD in mind, too, but it would have been the PODxt or X3 which are over your price range and w/o a DAW^^. So if the DAW is included, that´s definately the way to go.

At this stage I'd probably recommend something from Line6 as well.
Cheap ($60) and 'fully featured' DAW software are Reaper ( http://www.reaper.fm/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) or EnergyXT ( http://www.energy-xt.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ). Maybe not as fully featured as some software that costs 10x that, but you get 60% of the package at 10% of the price. It'll be years until he even notices any of those missing features.

Tc electronic just came out with a new interface called the Impact Twin, might wanna check that out.

Reaper (http:/www.reaper.fm) for $60 and an M-Audio or EMU interface for $99. Need to use an existing PC or Mac but it will get you started

+1 on the line6 hardware (I own a UX-2 and it perfectly fits my AMATEUR needs)
keyword(to me) in home recording is l a t e n cy... above 10ms is just not playable for me.
reaper + line 6 won't cost you an arm, and shall suit him, another crucial aspect is to have a good processor with(very important) at least 2GB of RAM.
