I like this song, Its sounds very raw. A lot of whammy use on 4, 5, 6 string , big whammy sound.
I agree; I find myself thinking back to this song and Call it Sleep very often. Steve's playing sounds raw, naked, and fresh.
If you enjoy this sort of open improvisatory guitar style, I recommend Shawn Lane records such as Temporal Analogues of Paradise, Time is the Enemy, or Personae.

Oh! Greeeat track, that. And yes, his playing sounds very, very raw and real, which I like. I guess I'd love to hear him do something like that again, without a lot of reverb and delay and processing.
Love the lyrics on that one, too. A very Zappa-ish song.

Well I am sort of sad that this post did not get a lot of replies really.
I mean come on, any song by Vai could be a a huge book.
Junkie is a song that has so much going on in it. I notice that one part with the whammy bar sounds like the person (persona) is pulling the hair out of his head, yet the final riff gives some hope for the guy.
Steve has stated in his Little Black Dots that he emulates feelings like pulling the hair out of one's head in his playing style and techniques.
Well there are two paragraphs for two Phrases of the composition.
I could write so much more, but I guess people are not into that sort of thing around here.

Yes,playing in Junkie and Call it Sleep is naked, raw, out of tune...it is pretty human...and that is what gives those tracks that certain style...
