Your Favorite Chord

#1 Post by another virtuoso » Wed Sep 27, 2006 1:46 pm

I was wondering if anybody has a favorite chord, whether it be a G Major or something really exotic and fresh.

I like A6add9 and m9 chords a lot...hard to choose favorite chords though. They're all just so good :D

*try playing A6add9 like this:*

e - 0
b - 0
g - 6
d - 4
a - 7
E - 5

I'm with Pure here. I love 9th chords. Especially minor chords.

I major sevenths a lot too. And I like using seconds sprinkled in there as well. Anything but straight major or minor chords, really. And very, very seldomly straight power chords.

A7M9

love it coz it uses a lot of resonance too and by moving those two fingers it can lead to several directions easily too.

Amaj9 would be the correct name for it. A7 means that it has a dominant seventh which it does not. It's a major seventh.

Lovely chord though :D

I like this one:

e 0
b 0
g 2
d 4
a 4
e 2

F#m11

ooh, i love that chord. If u shift the G string up to the 3rd fret, thats also a nice chord. Check out the Alter Bridge song 'Burn It Down' which uses it as well as song other nice ones!

I like this one:

E X
B 7
G 7
D 5
A 7
E 0

Not sure of the name, Eadd sumit or other. Kinda funky.

One of the best Dream Theater progressions:

E:2
B:3
G:2

E:0
B:3
G:2

back to 1st, then...

E:1
B:3
G:3

E:0
B:3
G:3

E:3
B:3
G:0

back to DMaj, then...

B:10
G:9
D:7

B:8
G:7
D:5

B:5
G:5
D:5

B:0
G:0
D:0

DT's Awake album = underrated.

I have a bunch of strange chords I like using - BIG Dream Theater fan and really like Eric Johnson's wide spaced arpegio idea.

Drop C tuning (especially on an acoustic)

D ----0----
A ----0----
F ----2----
C ----3----
G ----3----
C ----3----

D#, A#, D#, G, A, D which should be something like D#maj add b5 (actually with both 5th and b5th that creates that "esoteric" feel...)

and then

D ----0----
A ----1----
F ----0----
C ----3----
G ----3----
C ----3----

D#, A#, D#, F, A#, D ... D#maj (no 3rd) add 9

All About Eve docet

:P

Eb G D F A (Bbb)
I like this from the Eb on the 5th string. Don't know if it's my favorite but I call it EbMaj9(b5). It also sounds pretty cool with a b9.

There's also the whole first sequence from the Brouwer etude #6 which Randy Rhodes uses in one of those Ozzy songs
a A C# D# E
a G C# D# E
a F#C D# E
a F C D E
a E B C# E
..and terminating with Big Bill's chord
a E B C E
before moving baselines

mmn I love Emin + 9 (the second one). For me, its the opening of DSotM, and reminds me of how majestic that album is.

Also:

E 12
B 9
G 11
D 12

Its in "Hideaway". I dont have a clue as to what it is. Odd the way it has F# and G#. The E and B strings are a 4th (or 5th, depending on how you look at it) and the G and D are a 3rd.
