Lyrically I love 'Still my bleeding Heart' although it's not Steve singing, Devin is a killer, love that crazy sucker! The lyrics are very cool. 'Rescue me or bury me' is up there too.

Of Steve singing I'd have to say 'Aching Hunger'. Just really dig that whole song. 'Dying for your love' is also way cool and very intersting vocals by Steve.

Maybe he is not a great singer, but I think he is good (at least it's better than Satch or Malmsteen :D ) Some of my favorites are:

The silent within
I'll be around (I like the lyrics too)
I'm your secrets (I don't know exactly why but I like this song so much)
Ligth of the moon
All about eve
Alive in an ultra world

Is Steve who sings this song or Zappa?

Steve mimicking Zappa.

But no one actually can sing like Zappa when he does his out-of-tune swooning thingie, which is often. That's a good thing, I guess.

Think about it for a second, though, a spell on Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and the like making them go Zappa-ey for short bursts at unpredictable moments. Please?

I think Steve will be remember as a great songwriter. I mean,he's not just soloing over some chords or riffs,he writes songs with memorable melodies, riffs and the songs have structure too. There's not so many instrumental guitarists I like, the reason being that their music is so boring and uncreative, solos after solos. Guitarists like Satriani and Vai make the kind of music that a good band would do. With structures and something to remember.

I personally feel that both Alive in an Ultra World and Real Illusions have lyrics/singing that is significantly above the earlier material. I don't know what he changed, maybe he crafted the melodies in a different way or something but something about them makes them a lot more memorable and functional than his earlier songs.

Under it All is my favorite Vai song also, lyrics and all.

He tried to do that for the RI:R album. Didn't work out.
I didn't know that.. Who did he try to get on his album? Was it Devin Townsend? He's definetely one of my favourite singers!
And I'd also like to say that All about Eve contains my favourite Vai-Lyrics. It just grabs your heart. Brother isn't bad either!

I think Steve is an excellent singer, better that Satch by far! I think he should sing more at his shows. He was sooo cool singing 'Fire' on the Astoria DVD 8) and he could sing that to me anytime
