Vai's lyrical and singing ability

#1 Post by faithplusone01 » Tue Jun 27, 2006 8:19 am

Hey everyone! I'm new here but i've been into Vai for about a year or so now...i have "The Infinitive Steve Vai", "The Ultra Zone", "Passion and Warfare", and "Real Illusions:Reflections", and i'm getting "Fire Garden" soon...

My question is what does everyone think of Vai's lyrical and vocal ability? And what are in your opinions the best examples of each?

I love the lyrics in "I'm Your Secrets", and i think he sings best in "All About Eve", although the lyrics are spectacular there as well.

The rhythm guitar playing in every song in which he sings is very good too... i have trouble playing it and even thinking about something else at the same time!

I think Firewall from real illusions has good lyrics and the guitar playing is well how is it always.

+ 1 for Rescue and Eve!

I love the guitar part for I'm your secrets but I don't really like his falsettos. Love the lyrics, though.

And Under It All has a strong concept and stories. I was surprised, Steve often goes way into the "Oh nevermind" zone (RI concept liner notes - you gotta love it :D ) or the so-soft-it-melts-in-your-hands (I'll be around, can't stand this song). Kudos on this one, that's not quite on par with Maynard, but still!

I'll add Silent Within (minus the weak bridge) Alive in an Ultra World and Voodoo Acid.

Sadly, Wipeout 2000, Blood and Tears and Ya-Yo-Gakk are not in the race.

Slightly off-topic: I'd like to see Steve work with extravagant singers, like he did with Devin Townsend, especially Serj Tankian. That could be something.

He tried to do that for the RI:R album. Didn't work out.

I don't really care about Steve's vocal capabilities. Take for instance Roger Waters or Mark Knopfler - both fantastic "wordsmiths", but nobody would ever dare to call them great vocalists, at least themselves they wouldn't (definately not MK).
I think, Steve's singing is OK.

My favourite lyrical songs by Steve, By far are Silent Within, and Light of the moon.

Lovely songs :D

I'll be around is also one of my favorites.

Cheers,

Amazing voice, sounds like His soul to me...

And as far as playing tunes where He sings I could go on playing All About Eve for hours, really, it has some kinda esoteric appeal to me. Unbelievable...

Edit: Hands up for Rescue Me Or Bury Me, Selfless Love, You're Here & Love Blood too

IMO Mr vai is not a good singer I prefer gilbert's singing than Mr Vai, I think mr Vai should stop singing and do pure instrumental shit Just my opinion
