I personally like active electronics, specially if you're into 'metal'-type playing (which I guess you are).
I also guess you are a starter, if not you might consider buying a 5-string. The extra low one adds a lot of possibilities to your playing, and in fact makes a lot of riffs and runs easier to play.
I own a 6-string Pedula (active), I like the sound, but except for some crazy solo's (which are pointless but fun to do) I never use the highest string.

id go with the (RED ONE) because it has the 24 frets. I have one bass and play it only sometimes but really, just like a guitar with 24 frets opens up possibilities so will a bass with that number of frets. As far as pickups and the sounds you will be able to produce any effects that you add in or an equilizer will be able to offer a wide range of differents types of styles. Versatility in guitars is a great aspect which is why i got a jem. Go with the RED ONE

Trip that they discontinued them... you'd think the Attitude would be for Yamaha Basses what the Jem is for Ibanez Guitars.

Where Steve took a Stratocaster design and pushed it into an aggressive rock guitar design (strat on steroids), Billy took a Fender Precision design and pushed it into prolly the ultimate rock bass (Fender P Bass on steroids).
