Jazz can really easy turn into a circle jerk for musicians. It ends up being a bunch of musicians sitting around watching each other get off with how complicated their lines are and how fast and cool they are.

That being said, I'm a jazz performance major at college, and that's not what jazz is about, but that's what it ends up being far too often.

Jazz degrees aside, (I have two of them..) I am having a hard time understanding the point behind statements like this, especially from the executive of a jazz record company. Have you ever heard David Geffen say something like "alot of rock music is meandering in a harmonic dumpsite." Sure, alot of it [/i]is, but whats the point of saying it in a press release? Is Steve afraid of being seen as a jazz snob to the demographic that buys records from his rock label?
