I was just wondering what musicians will Steve invite for the next tour.

My favourites would be:
Guitar: Dave Weiner
Guitar/Keys: Mike Keneally
Drums: Mike Mangini / Mike Portnoy (maybe he would have some free time 'cause leaving DT 8) )
Bass: Bryan Beller / Philip Bynoe

those musicians that you mentioned [except Portnoy] have played with vai and in his band.

i would love to see vai play with different line-up..just like we discover those two great vaiolin players

yes, but unfortunately with the whole groningen orchestral music he's been really focused on that and that alone I think, even if I agree with you, I'd trade 2 touring years for one(100% new material) studio album!

I'd like to see Thomas Lang on the drums . . . can you see Steve and Tommy trading 4's? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang

No offense to Jeremy . . . . but come drum solo time, let's have a display of fireworks . . . not just playing time and backing a track of noise . . . .

+2

I think it's time for a drummer change indeed, fusion, compound syncopated, someone of the caliber that goes beyond "binary rock", Jeremy is a very good rock drummer but Steve's music demands much more in my view.

Alex DePue: Violin and keys
Billy Sheehan: Bass
Devin Townsend: Vocals, guitar (thats never gonna happen)
Mike Manginni: Drums

Portnoy would be killer but I'm sure he would demand too much money.

Portnoy did 2 JP/G3 tours so if Petrucci/G3 can afford him i'm sure vai could.

ALSO- i think jeremy is the best guy for the job- i dont want to see some prog/fusion guy all over the place ruining everything.

I think Portnoy did G3 more out of friendship for Petrucci than for the money.

And a prog/fusion drummer ruining a Vai show? In my opinion Jeremy ruined the whole Vai circus. I stopped going to the concerts just because of him. He's a good drummer, but much to straight forward for Vai's music. I adore the 96-00 shows though, with Mangini and Keneally. After that the shows got mehh for me. Even with Macalpine. He's great, but Vai needs a Zappaesque player, not a neo-classical one. They are all great players, and they brought out great music, but for me, they didn't suit Steve's music.

So in short, I'd like to see:

Guitar and keys: Mike Keneally
Bass: Philip Bynoe, Bryan Beller, and just for experimant sake Michael Manring
Drums: Mike Mangini, Terry Bozzio, Marco Minneman or Johan Langell
Steva Vai: Steve Vai

found this on Dave weiners 'new' site .....
In addition to Dave’s solo music and his fusion improv trio, Dave will continue touring in Steve Vai’s band with another world tour starting in 2011.

...glad to hear he is still part of the 'Vai' camp
