I'm sorry, I need more WTWTA discussion

This site is killin' me...I came here after seeing the WTWTA DVD and I think it's one of the greatest works I've ever seen. But there's just the one DVD review thread?..as if this isn't a legendary recording?? I don't get it. I respect everyone's right to be a Vai fan in their own way, but I just don't want the absolute magic of this concert to be just casually tossed into Steve's catalog and forgotten about.

In my humble opinion...

- this DVD makes Steve's legend absolutely complete. This one concert can forever referenced as proof of his genius for others who are not aware. We could debate whether this is his pinnacle moment. I'm not as aware as you guys as to what he's been doing in the last few years, but for me...this is Vai better than I have ever seen him.

- this recording is historic. This concert would be a monster to play in a recording session. Now imagine playing it all live back to back. THIS IS INSANE.

- Steve arranged this concert brilliantly. It has everything. It is so complete. Some people were complaining about the violins...I could not disagree more - to me it compliments his music completely and makes his music more...musical? I dunno, but I love the mix of instruments.

- Steve transcends "guitar music" with this....this concert could be enjoyed by a WIDE range of listeners. And it doesn't down-play his skill on the guitar. It does it all.

Not silly, but let me explain why...because this recording is EPIC BEYOND WORDS! Thus..we could have 10 threads on it and I would think nothing of it.

But even if that weren't the case, other reasons include the fact that the other thread is more specifically a review thread, not a place to wax poetic about different things you found interesting, or debate of any kind. Also, this entire forum is on-life support, so I think we should take all we can get personally.

My main reason is again because I don't think this recording is getting enough attention in general, and not even from the fans here. But I think WTWTA is the one that could push Steve to the largest audience he's ever had, at the same time putting to rest any question of who the best player in the world is. I can't imagine even top players not recognizing this concert as a landmark.

WTWTA is a live recording. It doesn't contain any new music, besides the sweet tune at the end of the cd. I guess that's why it's getting less attention than a new cd.

And I don't recognize WTWTA as a landmark. It's great and all, but a landmark? I don't share your opinion. When you say landmark, I think of Hendrix at Woodstock and Pink Floyd performing The Wall in it's entirely. To me, WTWTA is just Steve kicking ass. Maybe it's because I saw him 7 times live, and got used to his other live performances. To me, there's nothing new to it. Besides that, the drummer simply doesn't do it for me. Too straight forward. Mike Mangini was the best drummer Steve ever played with, in my opinion. Ok, Terry Bozzio was the best drummer, but Mike suited Steve's music more.

Well, IMO one long review thread is enough, keeps the site free for other topics....
as well as the dvd goes, it's great of course, but being a Vai fan for 20 years and having
see him numerous times I don't consider it his pinnacle or ultimate statement, just a
great recording of a show from his last tour. I was more in tune with say the Ultra Zone tour
line-up, that to me was THE Vai band, those shows very just epic, I wish we'd gotten a dvd of that tour or the Fire Garden tour for that matter, they just had such great chemistry....and that atmosphere that band created together was magical, whenever I put the G3 '96 dvd on I just go "wow". Guess I just don't really feel that special bond with this band, but that's just me.

To me the Steve's best moment was the Ultra Zone tour. I figurely pissed my pants when he dropped his coat on the guitar at the end of Windows to the Soul. Perfect timing. Unfortunatly, there is no official recording of it. There is a broadcast from Bulgarian television, which I will not discuss further, since it's not Steve's release. You have to find this for your self.

Other highlights, officially captured, the first G3, Blue Powder on the Astoria DVD, the Zappa plays Zappa dvd (including the peaces without Steve) and the Sevilla concert. But anyway, it's great that you love WTWTA so much. It certainly deserves some credit.
