It's a pleasant, triumphal sort of piece, with opening lines restricted to a few but well chosen notes, but of course Steve articulates them with his usual melodic skill before launching into so trade-mark fretboard histrionics. I can't hear S&R in there anywhere- it sounds more like his later material around the '...Ultra World' album era perhaps (towards the end there's even a repeated motif that hints at 'Being with You' from that live album). The backing sounds OK to me-the drums didn't come across as being obviously from a machine, if they are at all. I think its very nice indeed, its very 'Steve' and reminds us of what Steve can do in terms of injecting emotion into a tune. Lovely.

Download this now-I think very few Vai fans will be disappointed.

Not at all, it's more about the way the statements were made. If he just said that it isn't his cup of tea, fine. But saying Steve is on drugs and it's his worst, I think a little insight in why excactly it's so repulsive for him is way more valueble critique than just saying that it sucks. Otherwise, what would be the benefit of saying it on a public foruml? After all, we're here to discuss :)

That's good to hear. The drug related remark was a little bit too much indeed.

I agree, it was overdone.

I Have been a Vai fan since I was a child. I have always listened to each one of his songs in shear amazement, wondering how he comes up with the mesmerizing melodies and sounds that capture every part of your imagination. "Without Me" was another one of those. I spent two whole days learning this song because it did just that. I love this song!!!

I like it. At last, some new (sort of) music.

Definitely not the worst song he's ever done, put it that way....

I love this song. I had already heard it since I got the "Musicians For Minneapolis" CDs in May '08. To me it's interesting to get to know what Steve was originally thinking when he made it, I mean the reference to Pia and that kind of sentiment. I think there's a note of sadness in the repeating melody, but I feel it definitely resolves into some kind of happiness. I mean, the solo to me is just beautifully soaring. At first I had wondered why Steve never released it before, but then I think I understood more or less, because the song has a particular character that maybe wouldn't have fit on previous records like Fire Garden or those that followed. I like to listen to it at least a couple of times at every chance.

This is what I wrote when I first heard it:
I received the CDs today. Steve's track is... beautiful, he keeps on amazing me time after time. There's not a single square inch of wallpaper in that song, I feel every note is sincere and meaningful. It's like a 4.55 minutes long emotional journey blending feelings of melancholy and love, soaring and resolving into... well, the final feeling I got is happiness. The phrase "We are perpetually rebuilding everything, from our cities to our souls" fits perfectly the sentiment of the song.
It's nice to see there still were people who didn't know about this song until now.

Steve, thank you so much for VaiTunes!

I'm really impressed with this track. Sounds great.
Annoyed I didn't hear about it's release (on the Musicians for Minneapolis CD) prior to this Vaitunes deal.

Can't wait to hear more :)
