Vai ever play a Les Paul?

#1 Post by gmercer9 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 6:21 am

Does anyone know if Steve ever recorded playing with a Les Paul? I would love to hear his technique with a Les Paul tone.

I don't think he has. I recall Steve saying he has real difficulties with the 24 3/4" scale length of the Les Paul and can't get on with it.

There's at least one in his collection from what I remember.

If I remember correctly he used one for a couple of licks on Passion and Warfare...a black beauty if I'm not mistaken.

I'd love to hear a clip of Steve on the PRS, they really are lovely guitars and I'm all about novelty when it comes to artists trying something new for the hell of it.

Just read a comment of Larry DiMarzio on my copy of "DiMarzio Maniac" (DiMarzio pickup catalogue published by Young Guitar Magazine in Japan recently), that is like this, Steve asked DiMarzio to make a new pickup by which his JEM sounds like his '96 Les Paul and then "Breed" came out.
I don't know Steve still has the '96 LP...the page the link of which cbr1000f put for us says he has only one LP purchased in '89...or, DiMarzio or YG might have it confused with '96 LP.

Interesting. I don't think the JEM sounds anything like a Les Paul however.

Sure, me also think so. Though I don't have good ears.
DiMarzio says more about Breed pickups:
humbuckers section of DiMarzio site wrote:The neck pickup is a bit louder and fatter-sounding than the PAF Pro® pickups that Steve used on his earliest Jems. The bridge pickup is not as hot as the Evolution®, but it's got a warm and punchy mid-range coupled with a fat low end that rolls off before it can get muddy.

It seemed they tried to make JEM into a kind of LP though there're a lot of differnces between them...? (Accouding to the catalogue they also considered the effect of his amp, of course.) If so, I feel it's understandable why Steve wanted the sound and tone of LP.........he is one of main endorsers of Ibanez........if the story on the catalogue is true. haha
