The first and the last note aren't sure ways to find a key sig, but if i'm analyzing something with one sharp in the key sig and it starts and ends on a G chord with a G in the melody, I'm going to assume it's in G until I hear otherwise.

Not to spark any conflict, but people hear music differently. Just because you hear emotion in Vai's music doesn't mean everybody does. The emotion that a player has when he records a tune doesn't always come across. I, for one, think Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of Little Wing is one of the most em...

What you're doing with the Aeolian flat 5 is a mode of jazz minor that corresponds with half diminished chords, which are the ii chord in a minor key. Whare you're doing is implying the parallel minor tonality over this major vamp. The Ab lydian dominant is a tritone substition of the diatonic 5 cho...

G major is the tonality of that vamp. Dorian over the Amin7 and Mioxlydian over the D7 are the correct chord scales. That being said, there's any number of cool things you can do. Try Aeolian flat 5 over the Amin7, and AbLydian Dominant over the D7. If you play anything with enough confidence it wil...

You can harmonize 2,3,4,5,6 etc notes above, below, or both. If you want to play an intelligent harmony, say a 5th above, you just play the orginal note a the 5th note from there that one while staying within key or the scale that you chose. You simple do that with each note and on time, then you g...

Re: APPLYING SCALES

First let me say that it is unhealthey to use this kind of approuch. I don't think this is unhealthy at all. When it comes down to it, scales and modes are just ways to organize sounds. Everything you play is chromatic. Say I'm playing over a C Major chord, and I use C Ionian. I'm probably going to...
