Fitting is essential. Breaking the box has nothing to do with that. You don't hate a steve vai solo because it fits, you embrace it because it fits so well. Every note has its own purpose. No one practices for 10 hours a day, thinking all the while, "God damn me if any of these notes ever make a com...

thats not the point. all of the players seen in this video are just throwing off notes as fast as they can. If you call Rusty Cooley "music" you are mistaken. Also, I'll take it that you don't know much about Coltrane, because if you did, you would know that Coltrane spent years developing a matrix ...

The only guy that really did it for me was Goncalo Pereria. The classical piece sucked, but his electric playing was very tasty. The other guys (save for vai) were just hacks. I'll include Lane and Cooley and the lot of them in with that. None of them play anything that "fits" in the least bit. Lane...

Donald Fagan - "Maxine"

I just recently got turned on to this song. My God is it ever beautiful. For those that don't know, Donald Fagan is one of the two main memebers of Steely Dan (the other being Walter Becker). This is off of Don's solo album, The Nightfly. If anyone has every heard this song, I think you'll totally a...

I've FINALLY discovered how to practice

I finally made a practice schedule worth talking about. It is going to make me stop sucking so hard. I do three hours a day and a 4th on Wednesdays. I recently decided that I don't really want to be, primarily, a rock guitarist. I'd rather be an all around guy. When I get older, I want to be a sessi...

How to work out of the Real Book

I'm getting a Real Book for Christmas and would like to know what some good tunes to start working on are and what I should do to get better at jazz.

How the hell do you solo over these changes?!

It's a song called "Peg" by Steely Dan and it goes like so:

Cmaj7 - Bm7+5 - A7sus4 - E7sus4 x2
A - C - G - F#7 - Bm7 - E7#9 - Am7 - Dadd9sus4

changes go at 2 chords per measure at 117bpm

I want to be a sessions musician

I decided recently that I want to spend my life being a side man/sessions musician. Ya see, I've been listening to a lot of Steely Dan recently and I know that they would write all of their music, then hire musicians to record with them and the few times that they toured, they had to hire musicians ...

hybrid pick it. if you do a lot of tapping then you should be pretty familiar with "hiding" the pick in your curled finger, so use that for the moments that you need fingers and then whip the pick out again when called for.

I don't play like steve on anything

it's because I can't.

I only know how to sound like Ryan Layton, be it that i'm playing my Strat or my Tele or someone else's guitar.
