it's an unconscious thing you don't force it you just kind of go with it and get in the zone with it and then speed happens and then you just ride it and this is how you develop it i totally agree it's something you use sparingly or at the right time or when specifically called for it's no substitut...

There's some really helpful info there from Ricky and others which is just GREAT! (THANKYOU ALL SO MUCH) :D Unfortuneatley the theory forum seems to have slowed down.... Where have all the theory-heads gone? ...ohh how will we ever learn? :cry: um...that was a question not a Peter,Paul and Mary tune...

I bet there are SOME songs out there that you could play and sing :wink:

Start with those!

Just find as many easy ones as possible and work at it and
eventually you'll get better at it.Then you can move up in complexity!

All you really can do is just make a few of your own chord progressions, then try modulating them to different keys and playing on top of them.

That helps a little.I see what you mean by those happy accidents and stumbling onto your own ideas. I imagine accumulating your own little "rules" derived from those discoveries and sort of writing your own little book of theory,and forming your own formulas from those could be good. thanks Octavian...

phrasing and basic improv -please help

I just don't get how to do it.Why in god's name is it so damn hard? Can anyone give me any pointers ? I know that Satch exercise where you hit the bottom E string and then improv in the modes in E. That's kind of cool for practicing scales but how do you make phrases? Like with "changes" and stuff? ...
