yes you can run a ds-1 into your current gain channel to give extra bite, Mr. Vai does this so youd be getting close by just doing that alone! and a tubescreamer is an overdrive pedal, basically designed to do exactly what you want, boost a gain channel, but its also a very warm and classic sounding...
