In the 1980's you could go to a club on Sunset Blvd and for sure the headlining band would treat you to at least a 15 minute guitar solo while the singer went into the bathroom and banged some chick.

Thank god those days are gone. There weren't, and still aren't, many good rock guitarists.

a great exercise in concentration along these lines is playing polymorphic rhythmns to a straight drum track.

it gets confusing, but this helped me improve phrasing over more complex time signatures.
