Just play fast. Whatever you play in whatever mode... if you play it faster, it will sound better. actually I'm using the Ernie Ball Super Slinky's.
is this a good choice? i mean, i'm feelin' quite comfortable with them, but what about the sound.

Know your major and minor scales up and down the neck, all the shapes too, like the back of your hand! knowing shapes is quite helpful... if you know the shapes you know everything... other scale other starting point but same shape. for me, first thing i learned was fingerpicking (classical guitar)...
