I never tried the 555. I've got a Jem7vWH and a RG.
Jem7v is just a perfect guitar, guess the 555 can't reach that, but I don't wanna judge without trying.

actually I'm using the Ernie Ball Super Slinky's.
is this a good choice? i mean, i'm feelin' quite comfortable with them, but what about the sound.

Know your major and minor scales up and down the neck, all the shapes too, like the back of your hand! knowing shapes is quite helpful... if you know the shapes you know everything... other scale other starting point but same shape. for me, first thing i learned was fingerpicking (classical guitar)...

i couldn't handle alternate picking for quite a while... but you speed up with alternate picking. and music sounds more erm... "flowing" a little more legato.
but i would not say one style is better than another... they all come together...serious, alternate and sweep.
