One thing is to do a basic rhythm pattern, like just up beats or certain accent, constant instead of "comping". The other is to just hold chords and let them ring when there are changes. And the best thing is to share duty, let the piano comp for the sax, and YOU comp for the trumpet, etc. Cool, th...

I don't know that it's a "rule," but it sounds like crap to me. It's usually really mudded up with all the chords going everywhere unless you're filling in the others silence and vice versa. A lot of professional jazz players in the area at camps and clinics etc. have been telling me not to comp at ...

Comping
In jazz, there's a lot of comping for piano and guitar, but neither are supposed to comp at the same time. In fact, the only time it's desirable for both to play at the same time is pretty much when they have written figures. So my question is as a guitarist how do you know when you should be compin...

Yes - but if it is understood why something sounds that little bit different, then it is easier to add moments of tension/contrast in a piece, rather than letting it happen purely through accident (which is also fine, to a point). If one understands the effect that a particular compositional techni...

I can reply to more later, but for now this is all I have time for... I am not labeling myself as a jazz musician or restricting myself to jazz or saying all other music is terrible and hopeless. I enjoy listening to and playing tons of different music. Jazz is just what I enjoy most. By no means wo...

Jazz is some of my favorite music and to be honest I would rather Steve do his own thing. Something about dive bombs, high speed picking and screaming solos on top of an upright bass walking a ii-V7-I progression doesn't settle very well with me. Wait, isn't that Jazz fusion? Haha, not the wa...

can you afford the $25,000 a semester in tuition/bullshitfees? ....... and does what you want to do need that kind of degree? I can afford UNT if you want to call it that and Berklee I would need a scholarship. I think I can get a scholarship I've been all-state jazz guitarist the past two years, g...

Music Majoring in College
Hey everyone, I will be going off to college in the next year and I'm not sure what I want to major in. I live in America and will most likely be attending Berklee College of Music or University of North Texas. I have already taken a freshman course of theory and have narrowed my major down to getti...
