Hello i was hoping you guys could help me..

I currently use a MacBook with Garageband to do my recording but i want an actual desktop with 2 screens etc, turn my spare room into a proper small music room, but i'm not sure whether to get a Power Mac G5 for like £1000 or get a Mac Pro for £2000?

It would take me a long time to get the Mac Pro but that doesnt bother me. I would be running like i say 2 screens, would want 750gb - 1tb hard drive etc, i would still be using Garageband but would eventually like to go to Logic so could a 2ghz Power Mac G5 with 6gb memory handle these 2 programs and also some other sequencers etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Keith

As long as it's an intel processor with dual output on your G-card, you should be alright.

The Mac Pro for sure. More and more applications are no longer supported on the older generation G5 chips.

The new iMacs are pretty compelling too - lots of horsepower in those quad cores.

I´d go for a Mac Pro. I have one since the beginning of this year.

Well, you´ve had a Mac before, so the hype of "everything works, nothing breaks down" is gone, but still...I´d go for a MacPro. Apple never sleeps. What I would do is buy the "naked" MacPro and buy extra stuff like hardware yourself. I saved $1500 doing that, and I even had the choice of all apple hardware deliverers. So I took the better ones. Apple also only puts that stuff inside their Macs that´s available as the cheapest for them...and sells it for actual price plus 300%.

Remember the new Apple stuff smell (even the iPods have it)??? Go for it!!!

Mac Mini w/ 4GB RAM. Super sweet little computers. I use one for my home recording setup with Logic 9. Works flawlessly. I was amazed at how well it works for you. You can setup them up as nodes in Logic to spread the workload.

They are my favorite little machines these days.

Really depends on the level of recording you plan on doing, more isn't alway necessary. However since Apple abandoned the Powerpc chips, your better off just getting the newer box. Use whatever works, and don't worry about the specs.

Mac mini's are awesome, by the way.

I recorded my first cd on a G3 ibook/MOTU 828/Digital Performer/Reason, and it worked wonderfully. Personally, the fact that the new Macbooks don't have Firewire, blows.

Fortunately, unlike how it used to be, it's just a $200 bump to get to a machine with Firewire.
