Your favorite Delay pedal?

#1 Post by Pape » Sat Jul 19, 2014 1:00 pm

Hey vai fans. I'm in the search for a new delay pedal. I think I will go Eventide time factor, or Strymon timeline, but have not decided. What is your favorite delay? One of these? Another I'm not looking at? Why? Are there ones I'm overlooking?

I love ambient textures and weird sounds too, so I'm not looking for a warm analog, or bright digital, but a mixing of everything. Budget isn't in the harmonizer range! I'd say $500 US dollars. Maybe slightly higher. I'm not opposed to rack either, as long as can be midi programmed for floorboard.

At $500
you're not far away from a g-system

and you're above the price of a gmajor gmajor 2 and nova system

The timefactor is great

I also like the Line 6 DL4

You want more versatility so that's why i'm saying everything above...
I don't think a single stomp box would work for you if you want what you mentioned

BUT
If you want one or even two single stomp boxes
I'd recommend:

Ibanez DE-7 - used $40-60 total steal of a pedal
Boss DM-2 - $250-800 super great pedal
MXR Carbon Copy- $100 you'll like this one
Way Huge Aqua Puss- $100 Killer delay

I don't know your rig- but i think DL4 is the way to go
It's the industry standard.

I'd also have better/more specific examples if you gave me your rig/setup/and amp

A Harmonizer is a multi effects processor- studio quality- you're better off with a gsystem/axefxii/gforce over a harmonizer

the gmajor 2 is a killer buy because it's the same as the $1800 gforce (except no intelligant pitch shifting) the technology caught up with tc electronic and they're the same quality and now 1/4 the price

i have played and owned HUNDREDS of delay pedals
There is also a new DM-2 reissue

I think called the Boss DM-2W give that one a shot too

Will look into all of those, thanks.

Current set up is Ibanez RG's - 550/350dx or DBZ Barchetta (don't hate, it's actually one of my favorites!) into bad horsie wah, various pedals, overdrive, distortions, chorus, holy grail reverb into a Vox AC30 or valvetronix at practice. This rig replaces an axe fx ultra that I regret selling, but had some medical issues and quit playing for a long time. Eventually will have an axe fx 2 or the latest they release, but will always run more than 1 delay. I am currently using a danelectro dan-echo that is from the 90s I had when the axe fx got sold. It's terrible for all but a Slap back effect. I did a ton of ambient, long delays, spacial effects, modulated trails on the axe fx and looking for that effect again. The DL4 is a staple in many-a-rig, might see if I can find a good price on one. Carbon copy is very popular with everyone, will look at that too.

I don't think the danecho is a bad pedal but if you can find the rare wasabi dual delay- awesome pedal

speaking of dual delay- i didn't mention it but the BBE two timer is pretty awesome too.

On the right day you can find a DL4 for $100 sometimes
they're out there

Overall if you're open to more than one delay

get a Ibanez DE7 just for the hell of it- you'll love it- i'd pick it over a carbon copy

way huge aquapuss is still great

avoid anything pigtronix or earthquaker

I like the holy grail reverb- one of the best out there

(although the digitech hardwire reverbs are very impressive)

i buy dozens of pedals a day- it's my passion so i can go on for hours
ironically- i don't even use them- just collect them

After saying I don't want or need an analog delay. I think I'm going to order the new Waza craft dm-2 reissue. It will get me by for now. It's smooth and warm sounding and is a highly collectible pedal (the original) and then will get a second digital delay, haven't decided yet,

Why don't you like earthquaker or pigtronix? They seem to be the biggest trend where I'm at.
