Gravity storm,,,,HOW,..

#1 Post by tommyd48 » Thu Jun 27, 2013 6:53 pm

well I like this one and yes I have given my over all opinion on this cd.
now gravity storm you would think that vai uses his whammy at least I thought so untill I played the little bones CD where vai tells us about how and why the song came about. He says he didnt use the whammy for this one the notes were all bends. Now the mystery to me is that it sounds to me that the notes are bending down ,so how dose vai bend the notes down{notes going from higher to lower } without the use of his whammy.

any thoughts on this one as I cant figure it at all

Pre bends mate.

ie bending the string, then hitting the note, so its release becomes a descending note.

you get a good view of it being done here

and of course the master doing it

If you listen to the song closely you can here that as long as he has playing notes or using vibrato on a note the notes do not drop but as soon as he holds a note out with no vibrato it dives after a designated time period. I am working on this now. You should be able to do it with an Eventide H9 pedal or for sure the axe fx 2. It will take a harmonizer set at 100 % wet with the pitch at 0 or unison where it reads the pick attack and renews each time a new note or attack is made. So lets say it will hold the note for 150 ms or whatever before it begins to drop unless you play a new note or alter the one you are on with vibrato. After that 150ms time has been reached the harmonizer will automatically start to drop (or rise like in the middle of the song) until you hit your new note. Listen closely you will hear what I am talking about.
