Reverb Problem: EHX Cathedral vs TCE Hall of Fame

#1 Post by Dyens » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:10 pm

I'm going to pick up a reverb pedal soon and have it narrowed down to two that I particularly like. They are the Electro Harmonix Cathedral Reverb and the TC Electronic Hall of Fame. They've both got their strong suits and the things that are unique to either pedal are things I think I might really want but can't have in one single unit.

The Cathedral is has the biggest selling point: the ability to store a preset. But I would only really tweak a reverb pedal but so much. I mostly want it to even out the sound between two amps in my stereo rig that have very different reverb sounds. Still, not having to fuss with knobs is always a plus, especially on a pedal with as many knobs and settings as the Cathedral. It also has that cool infinite/tap tempo button that I probably wouldn't use much certainly wouldn't mind having. I also like the insanely creepy sound of the reverse reverb and could see myself getting some use out of it.

However, I generally like the tone of the Hall of Fame a little bit more. Plus the Tone Print feature keeps things fresh. I have the Corona Chorus and like it quite a bit. Plus it costs less and takes up less room on the floor. Over all, it does have more reverb styles than the Cathedral (11 including the Tone Print) and fewer controls to get lost in, making it easier to use and more versatile, too. I think that on the whole this is the more practical choice for sure. But something keeps pulling me back to that Cathedral...

Do any of you have experience with both of these pedals? What do you think?

Pretend it doesn't matter. Just tell me what you think about the pedals.

it does matter
because
my answer will be

GET A GOOD AMP
ANY GOOD AMP HAS REVERB

and Reverb pedals suck

(I'd recommend a Boss RV-5)

But between those two or any pedals anything that says TC Electronics is best

Clearly you have missed the point of this thread.

I have two amps with very different reverbs. Running stereo through them doesn't work when the wash on my two sounds is so dissimilar. A stereo reverb will even things out very nicely and make my sounds blend well.

Now, as for reverb pedals, I've listed two very fine ones. The boss reverb is terrible. It is so thin and digital in a bad way. It has such a disgusting trail. And a buffered signal at the end of the chain like that is no good what so ever.

If you still want to offer advice, just consider the two pedals I've listed and give yur opinions on them both and maybe pick one over the other.

And for the record, TONS of good amps don't have reverb.

now here's where what amp comes in...

are you using one preamp?
are you using the preamp of both?
are you slaving one into the other?
rack seperate pre/power amp?

are they the same amp? (model)

where do things turn stereo?
a delay?

is this in an effects loop?

if you want the short answer- i would go with the TC

but- it all depends how the rig is stereo and where it all comes from

This is stuff I know. But it is not stuff I asked about. Thank you for your two cents.
