New Gear Update plus tube and pedal questions.

Hey, Folks. Instead of making several different threads I'm just going to compile one big one here.

So, since last time I posted acquired a new guitar and a new amp. All in a month apart.

My new guitar is a used Ibanez RG560 from 1991.

Maple wizard neck with edge trem and ssh pickups.

Also, i acquired a Marhsall JCM2000 DSL 401
Nice little amp. All tube 40watts with EL84's.

So on to the next part. I was talking to my guitar tech and he thinks I can switch out the tubes from 84's to 606's. Has anyone done this to this amp?

Last question. I am interested in buying a distortion pedal for this amp. Here's what I'm looking at.

1) Boss DS-1
2) Ibanez Jemini
3) Majik Box's Fuzz Universe

Which one would work best for giving me that Whitesnake sound from the late 80's and will work towards a Paul Gilbert sound as well.

Thanks for your help.

Explanation.
The reason he is wrong is because of the power scale. You can down scale 6L6 to EL84's with this little gizmo but not the other way around ie:EL84's to 6L6 would require a power section rebuild/new transformer in the amp. There is also a pin/port difference to.

I was never able to get decent sounds out of the Jemini pedal. It's entire purpose was to replicate Steve's Tube Screamer and DS-1 pedals in one package. The main problem is you can't cascade them. Playing the TS into the DS-1 is the only way I could get them to sound good to my ears.

I have been very happy with the MXR Classic Overdrive. I think it is now available as the GT-OD. I also really liked the VOX Ice 9 Overdrive.

I get awesome results/great sounds out of a Boss Blues Driver

I wanted to make a few points about your amp

1- I LOVE THE MARSHALL DSL
it is the best amp they've ever made

2- I think the combos 401/201 aren't as good as the DSL100 head
Tonally they're surprisingly different and drastically different

3- The marshall dsl (and tsl) is also one of the WORST amps marshall has ever made design wise
there are numerous known issues with the amps and design flaws- causing the amp to blow up-
that's if you're even lucky enough to have the shit actually soldiered to the circuit board rather than components flying around inside or luckily staying in place unsoldiered and the amp still working

most amp techs have worked on DSL's and know the design flaws and issues with the amp and for a decent price fix them all and do tons of preventative measures to make it more reliable

anyway- get a DSL head, get it worked on a little and you're set
