Searching a budget tube amp...

#1 Post by Knai » Fri Jan 15, 2010 7:11 pm

Hey guys, i'm looking for some recommendations on a budget tube amp. So far this is what i'm looking for..

$500-600
All tube combo
Used or new
50w or lower (switchable is fine as well)
A decent clean for jazz
A lead or OD channel that can achieve Vai-esque tones when pushed or assisted with an OD or EQ.
I play alot of rock, not so much metal, and some jazz aswell. I've looked at a few amps but haven't been able to find them in my area. I'm also not planning on gigging anytime soon.

I'm thinking either Carvin x212b or a Mesa DC-5 if i can find them used.

Thoughts?

A used Carvin Legacy combo will cost about $600+, and is switchable to 50 watts.

I'd like to avoid a signature amp, kind of have a bias towards them. Anything else?

if you wanna achiece vai sounds the legacy is the only way to go.

otherwise I´d go for an Engl maybe.

Blackstar ht-5, unfortunatly with it being only 5 watt the clean channel does break up quite early, but apart form that it is an amazing amp

Engl is a bit out of my price range. The Blackstar seems decent, but does it take pedals well?
