Vai's Studio Monitors?

The name says it all! Discuss Steve's studios, your studios and gear set-ups, amps and effects here. This is not for discussing guitars (Steve's or otherwise).

Anyone know what the man uses?

My guess is he has a very high attention to detail so I feel it's a great question. Could cost a bomb though. :D
Maybe a better question would be. What does the mix engineer use? Errrhmm.....Last album as ref.

In the teaching examples of Freak S you can gear him blasting away. Now to me that sounds bang on to the album mix....anyone dig? Of course you can hear trail off of delay in that mix in the video. The way it's ment of course.

The engineer must of done an amazing job because his mix is very transparent. Which is prob what Vai exactly wanted from his home Studio to the main.

Again it's a tough choice of which monitors I'd be focusing on. So I'll go with the Home Studio Monitor...if that's cool with you chaps.

Yup, I've seen NS10's and KRK's in Vai's studios, too.

Although, on one of the last "postcards" or whatever you like to call them, Steve said he mainly mixes with headphones, on a very low volume and occasionally tests the sound on a few different sized monitors.

Yamaha NS-10's but I wouldn't be surprised if KRK's made their way to the HH as well :)

^^ What Jeroen said. he mixed the Sound Current 5.1 with KRK V6s, but he has another pair of higher end KRKs in the Hut too.

Can't remember the model off the top of my head though.

So really the only other question is what is powering them, AMP wise?

Loads of studio tech's say that..."The amp's just as important as it does give colorization"

I mean this is OTT but what the heck. I know it to be true though.

Interesting to hear people's thoughts.

API...can that do it? Guessing here.

They really aren't. Mid level at best. They aren't particularly flat either. A little bitey in the hi mid. If you want expensive go shopping for Klein and Hummel or other big time monitors. You can drop 5 figures on monitors easy if you want top shelf
