best tube brand?

The name says it all! Discuss Steve's studios, your studios and gear set-ups, amps and effects here. This is not for discussing guitars (Steve's or otherwise).

I know nothing about tubes, but I want to switch my tubes out in my Mesa from 6L6's to EL34's. And maybe switch the big tubes and the ax12's or whatever the little ones are. What do you think is the best brand overall?

IMO Groove Tubes. Ive been a user since 1990 I tried lots of tubes and for me those were the "ones" for me. YMMV

I have 6550's in my 50 watt Marshall 2205 head

I am very interested in this too (even though I play Line 6) as a curiousity. I would go with whatever Bogner, Rhino or VHT are using since those are the tube amps that sound best to me.

Guitarist James Byrd is pretty well known for his great tone and he's got a good article on maintaining amps at the bottom of this page: http://www.jamesbyrd.com/amps.htm

Also you can check out the "Ask Byrd" section where he answers questions on amps too: http://www.jamesbyrd.com/askbyrd.htm#amps

I really like Eurotubes. Their website is http://www.eurotubes.com. The owner (Bob) is very helpful.

since they all come out of the same Russian factory, i'm surprised they make that much difference. and if you don't know that much about them, you might want to leave them alone.

You want to change your Mesa tubes for EL34's? why'd you buy a Mesa then? should have settled for a Marshall if that's what you wanted it to sound like.
