this was the first vai show for which I purchased the front row evo experience package. we were let into the theatre just before 4 p.m. Were given our laminates, shirts, vip wristbands, etc...
Steve walked in shortly after, thanked us for coming out, & talked a bit about the tour before starting the q&a..
A word of advice to those that attend, if you want to ask him something, raise your hand as soon as he opens the floor to questions or he may not get to you.
Steve encourages people ask whatever they want, but his answers are very long, thought out, & informative. He warned us of it beforehand.
He probably only got to 4 or 5 questions in the hour due to the detail of his answers.
The autograph & photo portions followed.
After that, the band came in & they started sound check. Steve played through gravity storm, sisters, & a short jam with the opening act before turning his focus to just listening to the band.
It was impressive seeing steve talk the guys through parts that weren't as crisp as he wanted. He hears everything!
Sound check concluded around 6:30. Then those of that purchased the front row package were taken up on stage to get an up close look at steve's gear. We were allowed to hold & take photos with his guitars.
Thomas, Steve's tech was very open & generous with his time. He went over the how & why's of steve's rig.
To those that were interested, he also demonstrated how he went about setting up Steve's guitars to his specs.
By then it was about 7:15 and the doors were getting ready to open, so we had to leave the stage.
We were permittted to take any signed items & our evo goodies to our cars or hotel rooms before the show started.
The opener, Phil Degruy did a short set before Steve & the band hit the stage at 8:30. The show concluded just shy of 11:30.
Steve & the band were fantastic. Each guy puts every ounce of energy they have into the show.
It's obvious that Steve gets total joy out of every note he plays and it carries over to the audience.
I'm glad that Steve decided to do this tour and bring it to our area. It was one of the best shows I've seen. Hopefully, he will continue to make new Orleans a stop on his tours.
