How much bend to break a string?

#1 Post by Rachmaninoff » Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:41 pm

That's an experiment I'd like to do, but I never was brave enough to carry out.
Any of you guys have actually tested how much you can bend each string before they break?
Or, any speculations?

(If some parameter must be given, let's say, .009 strings at regular tuning on a JEM.)

I've broken a string by depressing the whammy bar all the way
bending the high e all the way up and letting the bar back up-
nothing i'd recommend doing.

They are tested at pounds per pressure. That is from the workshop without any type of playing fatigue. What I'm trying to say is that a string will break at different stages of it's life span. Dependant upon force & execution manner. That is also not allowing for any hardware inflications. Say a bridge that isn't precision or a nut that isn't precision, cut. You can break a brand new string when it hasn't bedded in & takes tension to fast. Maybe a 4 hr string or perhaps a 5 week string. It can be months before they snap. I haven't changed my string for months. Shame on me.

I can't break strings by bending them. I can litteraly bend them as far as I possibly can and they don't break.

That is assuming they are fairly new string of course...

I bought a pack the other day my high E broke in 3 days. Sometimes you can get a bad batch. But usually I can go a long time with out breaking them.
