Learning Songs

#1 Post by seeking 7 » Mon Aug 31, 2009 5:52 pm

Thoughts,
When learning a new tune which is fairly difficult... what is your most productive approach? i have found optimal results playing 3-4.. 20-30 min sessions per day. Playing only that song. In addition really listening to the backing tracking if you have it! singing the lead line improves timing and feel.
and you?

Yes i find taking half an hour or one hour breaks between short sessions are more efficient than hammering at it for the entire day as well.

5 sec and then 5 sec and then 5 sec...after I learn something like 30 sec or so (depends on the song) I practice only that and then take short break.

After that it`s all over again...

If I find something difficult to play I just separate it, make an exercise out of it and play with that here and there with metronome until I can incorporate it in the song

Those are some good suggestions...

What I try to do is 'lock' into the groove. It helps me identify the timing, rhythm, and how the song fits together overall.

Once I get the gist of the song, I will record myself and be very critical. What sounds good, what needs improvement, etc.
