I heard somewhere that it's not uncommon to name children after modes. I first thought that it was a little cruel, but now that I think of it, Dorian is a common name, and Lydia (Possibly from Lydian) is also common. However, I've never heard of anybody name Aeolian or Locrian or any of the other modes. Anybody else have any insight on this?

What a topic

Not quite a technical issue, but nevertheless interesting :)

Since the ancient modes are named after places and tribes in the antiquity (the Aeolian Islands, the kingdom of Lydia, the tribes of the Dorian and the Ionian etc.), it's very presumable that the names come from the latter ones, not the modes...

Although, it would be fun to name my boy "Phrygio Dominant" or "Locrian #2 Junior"...

you could call your kid Mixolydian, then you could nick name it 'Mixo' which would be cool "aright Mixo whats the story!"

I would be worried about my kid being made fun for his name. for instance aeolian could easily be changed to a-hole-ian.lol

Aeolian
Not sure WHY I remember this, but Eddie Murphy's African Queen mom was named that in the movie "Coming to America".

YOu could name your dog some cool mode, but a person... only lydia I like. How about "superlocrian" for your dog's name.

Superlocrian... that's like... a guy named Locrian Kent working at the Daily Planet and when criminals are on the run, he morphs to SUPERLOCRIAN!
