Why not just form a private Vai Army and kill that teacher?! Everyone seems to be mad at this teacher. Give him a break.. He may be 97 yrs old already to say those things....

If someones music can touch you or inspire you it must have soul.It is really special when an instrumentalist can do it.You relate to the music not a spoken thought. He has the talent to mix feeling with blistering notes. It takes talent to know when NOT to play.

'Vai has no feel'

-simple answer - this could just be rebutted back to you by saying 'you have no taste'.

well, as a guitar teacher i would say it's extremely irresponsible to trash someones hero. you have to remember you are helping to cultivate someones talent. it should only be encouragement. occasionally i have to teach stuff i don't personally like - so what? you do it for the student - perhaps steering them to other things that you think would help them as a musician. i don't see anything positive from saying "so and so is crap and so and so is better" - better? really?

Ditch the teacher. If he's not open to different styles and techniques, how can you be confident he's qualified to teach you anything?

people like your teacher can frustrate you for the whole life, go to study with someone who can teach you fresh stuff, we are in the 21st century...

Teacher? No!

Fear of the unknown, it is just human nature. But that kind of fear doe snot make a great educator. I would question the positive influence of any teacher that could say that. For some people just hearing distortion closes their mind.

Steve's playing, his note choice, his composition and his performance are they most expressive, emotion-filled music I've ever heard. It speaks to me, it moves me. But I can see it wouldn't speak to everyone just in that same way a certain poem, novel, play, TV programme would or wouldn't, because we all have different taste and that's what it boils down to in the end. For a musician to suggest "vai wouldnt know phrasing, feel or emotion if it slapped him on the arse. he reckons he cant play blues at all and reckons that all he does is play a million notes per second" shows his/her ignorance and the fact they haven't listened to Steve's music at any depth. If they had said, "I acknowledge Vai's incredible technical ability and thus his ability to express his emotion in music, but it doesn't do anything for me," then I'd respect his opinion, however if you've reported his words accurately, I'd suggest they are simply 'blues bigots'!
