When I started playing guitar about 5 or 6 years ago, I never liked using my pinky. Now I'm trying to stop that, because it's a bad habit and prevents me from getting better. Does anyone have any tips?

Try playing:

E---------------------------4---3---1----
B----------------------1---3---1---------
G-----------------4---3---1--------------
D------------1---3---1-------------------
A--------4---3---1-----------------------
E----1---3---4---------------------------

patterns up and down the neck with alternate picking and legato. If, like me, you find that the timing between your third and fourth finger is not very good, make sure you do these exercises with a metronome.

A good exercise for all fingers and also that helps keep your hand positioned correctly, is the top half of an ionian scale (shown in G):

E----------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------4---5---7--
D----------------------------4---5---7--------------
A----------------3----5---7-------------------------
E----3---5---7--------------------------------------

slide this pattern up the neck to start at frets 5 and 7 - lower down the neck is better for speed, strength and stretches, but go up as far as you like and then back down the same pattern. I alternate between picking it and legato - helps you play wide intervals at speed. Use a metronome, stop if it hurts.... blah-de-blah....

iv bin playin for abwt three years and i recently came across the same problemi found that chromatic style exercisestend to work well.

try these;

-1-2-3-4--------------------
----------2-3-4-5-----------
-------------------3-4-5-6--------
----------------------------4-5-6-7-------
------------------------------------5-6-7-8------
---------------------------------------------6-7-8-9
try just messin about with these, play them leggato or picked backwards forwards, all on one string dun rely matter aslong as u keep the same idea of the 1234.

hope this helps
