Ibanez hardware plating...

#1 Post by pawel » Wed Jun 11, 2003 7:43 am

Hello!! I've posted this on jemsite, but it looks like there's no one who
can help me. Mabye You would know something on this subject:

Hi! I have a quite unique question...

Does silver Ibanez hardware (edge, etc..) have nickel, or chrome used in it?
Is there possibility, that Cosmo-black (almost black, but metallic a bit -
i guess this is cosmo-black) hardware contain nickel/chrome?? Is it
possible, that the materials used in that hardware contain nickel/chrome?

This is very important to me, due to severe allergy I have on contact
with these metals...
Iv'e recently purchased great RG 550LTD, and I need to know wheter it
may kill me or not ;) Help me, please. It's very hard to find anyone who
could help!

Greetings!! P.

You're right... but Ibanez dealer in my country knows nothing, and do not even try to help... I've also tried to contact Ibanez by e-mail, but with no response so far

greetings.

maybe you should go with gold hardware??

Also, don't most (if not all) electric strings have nickel in them?

I'm suprised at how little is known about this kinda thing!

Well, i've been working a lot with hardware lately, helping kids building guitars, and I can tell you that all bridges/lock-nuts/tuners/barrell knobs, are made of BRASS.

The chrome ones, like on JS100, are Chrome-plated.

The black ones, are plated in a black coating.

The gold ones, are gold-plated.

As for the Ibanez custom finishes, like the brushed finish on the blue Jems and ergodyne guitars etc. you would, indeed, need to ask Ibanez.

So, to answer your question, the actual bridge and stuff is not chrome, it's brass, but it's covered in a few microns of chrome. I believe the Cosmo-black is just a mixture of finishes, so it most likey has chrome in it. The plain black doesn't. it's just black.

Contact Ibanez anyway but that's probably what they'll tell you.

I guess your nickle allergy doesn't cause anaphylactic shock? Just localised dermatitis/irritation?

Thenthe definitive test would be to hold the bridge against, say, the back of your hand for a few minutes and monitor the affects over the next few hours. At worst you'll get a rash treatable with some hydrocortisone 2%, at best you'll know it doesn't contain nickle and buy that beauty!

hydrocortisone is a sort of steroid, so if you ain't got allergy from nickel plating, you got it from it, hehe :P And if it sounds like suing Ibanez -- i don't like it! :x ;)

No, seriously, Pawel, if your RG550LTD has been modified so far -- are you sure it has a stock floyd on it? If not, maybe you could better ask the manufacturer of that particular one with more chances to get the answer.

IMHO you'd better go with those black plated ones in this case, as it's sorta oxide film plate cover on it that is no metal anymore (guess it's got that plating when this overheated thingie has got cooling in the machine oil or something like that).
