Actually, you dont have to make a cavity if you have enough room for a 9v battery in the back by your pots. thats where i have my battery, just put some foam (packaged with the pickup) around the battery, stick it in there, and screw on the plate. So you dont need to make a cavity.

the battery is on when the guitar is plugged in. they have 2000 hours of battery life, which is about 2 years. Its got more info about that on the site.

wow, thats a fair while. Do they go flat gradually? or is it a on/off thing.

the site says that there will be a slight distortion when pickup battery is low. Plus a slight loss of output. It will get gradually weaker and weaker. it doesnt just crap out.
