It depends very much on taste as how you describe "noise".
Or hear it.
Or like it.

Hi,
well from what I've read EMG's are the quietest pups on this planet.I've never played them so I can't say if its true or not.I use only EVOs and Lace Sensor noiseless pups.

My question to the ENG users would be the following:some people/magazines claim thet EMG pups sound very cold and sterile. Is that true?
Many guitarists known for their good tone use them(D.Gilmoure,S.Lukather) and to me they don't sound sterile at all.
So what do you guys think?

they have tone depend on the guitar i guess, but they sound very colourful with high gain just dont play clean.

So due to the high output they don't produce nice cleans?

i'm assuming it's due to the processing the pickups do. it's fair to assume that along with the imperfections processed out, some of the character is also lost.

i have found that when you play clean, there is no definition between the bass and trebble strings. it sounds not bad but it has no charater. When there is high gain you get al sorts of nice harmonics and its just good fun

IF you can find any you should try reflex pups instead..just like EMGs but better..a lot more natural/warmer sounding pup.
dont think they make them anymore tho .

I used to have some in my old strat ..best sound i had

i think im the only one that actually owns EMG's here. Yes, they sound great overdriven. yes, they have huge output. Yes, they are remarkably clean sounding. No, they dont sound like crap when being used for clean tones.

i was only assuming from what i know about them. if i'm wrong, i stand corrected, but for some people the tone might simply be to their taste, i'm sure you'd agree with that. and of course it'd depend on which EMG you get in the first place. but if you're happy with yours...
P.S, if i was ever going to look into some, which ones do you have?

cho_888 wrote:What do you guys think about the EMG 81 active pick ups, i played them in an ESP the other day and they were awsome, so much gain and the harmonic were so loud. i have been thinking about putting these in my RG570, good idea?
They are okay if you want alot of gain but in the future if you decide you wanted something with warmth and fullness you may not be happy. I always thought of finding pickups that sound great clean becuase you can always overdrive the amp or buy a pedal.
