Is Yamaha too underrated......

#1 Post by bluesbreaker » Tue Mar 03, 2009 2:22 am

......or beyond our understanding? In the guitar community the word "Yamaha" is often associated with starter and budget guitars, especially when it comes to the electric ones. So Yamaha is often ignored by the brand snobs and many others.

But if you do a little research, you will find out that Yamaha have made some of the best guitars in the business, right on par with the best of Gibson, Fender, Ibanez, Suhr, PRS, Martin..........., you name it. And even those budget models beat the hell out of the big-name guitars in the same price range and beyond! So why Yamaha is so ignored?

Aside from the guitars, Yamaha also make other electronic (keyboards)and acoustic intruments (pianos, strings, woodwinds, brass)that are top quality. Which other company can do that?

Also, AFAIK, they make some of the best studio / audio stuff. And they also have a huge chain of music schools. Which other company can do that?!

What? Do you want more?! OK, you asked for it!
Yamaha also make motorcycles, snowmobiles, golf stuff, boat engines, etc! At least the motorcycles are top notch. Now, tell me, WHICH OTHER COMPANY CAN DO THAT!?

Yeah, my parents got a external boat engine and it still works like a charm.
And goes very fast too..

Ha! How many of their guitars have you played? Or you just played the budget ones?

That's actually partly the reason they are so under-rated.

I remember trying a few in the late 80's. And then a super-strat variation in the 90's the 80's ones where a lot better but had through necks etc.

At the time, they had a les-paul type tone but that tighter action you get with a 25.5" scale.

Nice guitars certainley.

Yamaha has some VERY nice quality instruments... the problem is that

ITS NAME IS SOOO UNAPPEALING.

You might think "oh, it's such a unimportant factor..."
But remember, electric guitars are all about rock n roll, and most kids buying an electric guitar want a cool name on it.

It's so difficult to rock out with a guitar with "Hoshino" on the headstock right? That's also the reason why they are called Ibanez.

The reason I don't care for Yamaha is that I have never had the chance to play one that was properly setup. I'm not too picky, but these were horrible. Old nasty strings, dirty fretboard, intonation a full halfstep off, strings so high I could almost fit my finger under them..ect.

For guitars I go to Ibanez and Epiphone, for basses I go to Peavey(Zodiac Scorpio and T-40).

I´ve go a Yaaha starter guitar, was my first one, it plays very good, though all the electronics need to be changed because the volume pot doesn´t work anymore and the 5 way switch doesn´t either...but the guitar itself plays great.

I didn´t even play it that much that you could say things like this happen, even for a low budget guitar.

Actually that happens if a guitar is built between motorcycles and Jetskis

There are some amazaing guitars for a really reasonable price!

I've a Pacifica right now, not sure of when it was made. Yamaha kicked in locking Sperzel tuners, Seymour Duncan pickups (Vintage Single Coils and a Jeff Beck humbucker), and a Wilkinson trem. Pretty good instrument. Neck is thin and fast but only 22 frets, and the body is somewhat strat-like. I also had an RGX limited run before, also a good play. Yamaha guitars are great, and quality is topnotch regardless of where it's made. I think that it's underrated because Yamaha sounds like some kind of motorcycle or something. For me it'll always be one of the best guitar manufacturers around.
