Who has you top 3 favorite tones? Mine is Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Johnson and When Eric Clapton used Gibson's.

David Gilmour
When Steven Wilson used an ESP strat (the Porcupine Tree track "Navigator") is a good example of this.

Satch, Petrucci, and SRV all have nice tones too.

Also good are the current guitarist of Focus, Niels van der Steenhoven, and this guy.

I could spend a while describing whose tones I don't like.

• 1. Alex Lifeson (early HiWatt days and current Hughes & Kettner days. In between not as much.
  
  2. Joe Satriani (pre Peavey endorsement, especially the self titled album.)
  
  3. Jimmy Page (the Zep stuff of course, especially the Les Paul not so much the Tele but also the Outrider album. Prison Blues defines what Blues Rock guitar should sound like for me)

This is just an overall list though. For more specific without duplicating:

Rhythm

• 1. Eddie Van Halen (any Roth era stuff and some Hagar, especially Balance)
  
  2. John Petrucci (all of it, but especially Awake and Train of Thought)
  
  3. Kim Thayil (I must be a rectifier kind of guy because Badmotorfinger is one of my favorite albums)

Lead/Solo

• 1. David Gilmour (I could listen to him play one note all day long)
  
  2. Jeff Beck (the early solo stuff up to about 77 and then the electro trilogy stand out for me.)
  
  3. Neal Schon (he makes everything sound simply awesome)

Most of you guys are being really obvious, so I'm gonna be different.

1. Andy Timmons.
2. Greg Howe.
3. Marco Sfogli.

I love Vai, Satch, Petrucci, SRV, etc., don't get me wrong.
But these 3 guys have such fantastic tone!
Almost vocal.
That's what I like.

I didn't think anyone else knew that Andy Timmons existed. He's easily one of my favorite guitarists. Great influence. Steve Vai is obviously #1 in terms of tone he has such a wide range of possibilities. SRV just has great tone, what else can I say about him?

I totally love his tone... it's warm, yet uh "spicey" hot, sometimes agressive sometimes warm clean

it is really a good tone....

Vai is not on the list because well.. though he has gobs of tone it is his stellar technique and melodic sensibility that I admire most. Guys like SRV have that finger tone that no one else can match... hmmm Hubert Sumlin should be on this list too.. and... oh I better quit
