The appeal goes out of the door for me, then. When I hear Steve, or Nuno, or Kotzen, or Satriani, I can hear that guitarist's signature sound so easily - but I don't hear it with Guthrie. Just my two cents.
I knew Guthrie from teaching and QA videos, like, well, nearly everybody, videos which I loved, too : inspiring, informed and witty. Frizzly bearded funny guitar player with a brit accent? I'm in.
I did not really know his music nor cared that much to be exposed to it, but then I heard some of the Aristocrat's Culture Clash. He really does have a thing, and it shows even when he's not playing a zillion notes a second, something vivid and playful that did remind me of early Vai before I saw the interview references. He of course went straight into my favourite guitar players (granted, there are a few, but still).
That said, it's been a few years and I haven't listened to Erotic Cakes
yet, so maybe he just matured.
