I wondering if he'd get around to doing that. What's funny is that a few years ago I read or heard Joe asked what music he was currently listening to and he said he was digging Coldplay. Guess they dig him too.

Well, I'm not suprised. Melody and chord progression are very similar, granted the overall sound is different. I have a hard time believing it was entirely intentional, but the two songs are pretty close. Oh well...I always thought Coldplay was a 3rd rate U2 anyway, but in a good way... :D

Could it also be the record company Sony who want a more clear law on cases like this?
"Is There Love In Space" is released on Sony, I dont know who Coldplay are using.

I dont believe Satriani himself wants a long case on this, but maybe Sony has told
him to "just go for it" and are supporting him 100% ?

Of course Satriani himself also maybe want a more clear law on such cases.
But maybe not so easy to define a very clear law on this...

I don't think its purposeful, but there is definitely a very large similarity between them.
Its hard to know what to think but sometimes it can just be that the writer is unaware that they have heard the melody before and it subconsciously comes out in the music..
Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I've just had a row with a my other half (not for much longer!) about this issue. She says that she doesn't want the money that paid she for the Coldplay single going to Satch because she was buying Coldplay's version of the song not Satch's. But she says she's happy for the royalties of that song to go to Satch because that would be the usual process if they had used part of his song. She says if Satch's song was as 'good as' Coldplay's version, why wasn't Satch at the top of the charts?! Anybody care to comment?

1. Because Coldplay are already famous (a lot moreso than Satch)
2. It has lyrics, and therefore is easier to listen to (I don't get this one myself)
3. I'd have to check this one, but Coldplay's song is probably a lot newer
4. Coldplay were expected to release a new album (Viva la Vida) and they had the media attention on them.

Cue rant about how pop music sucks.

couldn't you just say it's because Coldplay are mainstream?

Wow, I was hoping a while back that it was all just a rumor. This has got to be a new absolute low point for Satch. You know you're really out of ideas when you start calling lawyers to generate revenue for you. Words can't describe how disappointed I am in the man. Just how f'ing original does he think he still is? It's one of his most trivial, pop-ish songs ever, inconceivable that the pop-megamarket could have come up with the same five notes and chords as well. Dear God. And then the old American lawyer bully-tactics: Jury trial, "any and all profits". I'm disgusted.

Maybe if his writing hadn't degenerated to the level of top40 pop songs he wouldn't feel he was being ripped off every time he turns the car radio on. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I feel much the way he apparently does when I listen to his recent albums, but about him.

This guy practically created the instrumental guitar genre on his own, for years, he was the cutting edge. Obviously those times are long gone now and we can look forward to him quibbling with Britney Spears and Puff Daddy over chord progressions and chorus melody. Way to go Satch.

A little bit agressive, but I kinda agree with you on this one.
