My personal favourite is from 1986...Edward Van Halen in his prime....He's just the epitome of cool, he really looks like hes enjoying himself and sounds just awesome, the cigarette hanging off the headstock just tops it off !

Me too! I remember watching it after a drunken night out as a young man at a friends house (we always put the video on) when his elderly Grandma shuffled in on us and stared at the TV screen for a few minutes, watching intently. After some time, she turned to us all and said, "That man seems to be in complete harmony with his guitar-almost like they're one entity" and then shuffled off to bed.   It was hilarious.

When Live Without A Net came out I was 12 and an air guitar virtuoso. I broke my parents coffee table jumping on and off of it "playing" that solo. My dad wasn't near as impressed as I was.

Yup. This one's my fave as well. I dunno how many times I've seen it but I definitely know it by heart. I've heard quite a few live EVH solos, but that's the best one. It's like, not a single note wasted or played badly. It's just perfect. And yeah, that really was the best EVH era.

My fave bit is after he plays the Mean Streets tapped riff and he goes into this improv'd variation on the same technique. It's just so groovy.

EVH's sense of rhythm is definitely underrated.

I remember one by John Petrucci, Hollow Years I think; yes it is Hollow Years. Pretty cool, really cool.

The best live Petrucci solo imo is the one he does in the middle of To Live Forever on the live in Tokyo dvd. I'd link to the youtube page but yotube works seriously bad at work, heh.

One of my favorite live solo's ever is in "Still In Love With You" from Thin Lizzy's album "Live". John Sykes is such an amazing player.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps by Yellow Matter Custard.

Gilberts solo is Simply awesome on that track.

Absolutely, the intro to 'I'm the one' on the first album is simply jaw dropping rhythm playing
