:shock:
p3 'So, you're not back together', 'Heather [Mills] forks out £400,000 for a presidents pad', p.3 'Has Thierry Henry blown the whistle on his marriage?', p.11 '1-0 to Victoria thanks to a posh frock', p.21 'One flew over the pizza box....', p.25 'Mrs Bin Laden: I'm broke and need a good lawyer'.......and on and on it goes. I haven't bought or read a newspaper in many years, but I was shocked at what I saw in The Mail-it is utter bol*ocks. If you say that's 'one of the more intellectual newspapers', lydian7, then I can't even begin to imagine what other papers are like and I'll heed your warning and continue to avoid all newspapers. I have sympathy for what b2 wrote, but I don't think it's just the tabloids-all newspapers are merely 'tittle-tattle'. If I could've got this CD for free by some other route, I would've done, but alas...........

I admire Prince for doing what he has done, it is a rare example of a musician doing what HE wants to do for a change, and not just basically "checking out" once the tracks have been laid down, and letting the suits do the rest. It's not always about making money, I think Prince has done a good thing. In the words of the great Captain Beefheart;

"I don't want to sell my music. I'd like to give it away, because where I got it, you didn't have to pay for it."

There 968 copies of Plant Earth on ebay! If Prince isn't bothered about making money on it, it seems lots of other people are!

Clearly you didn't read my post. he ALREADY made money on it - more than if he had sold them in stores.

Sorry Mikey, I thought your post was conjecture. I didn't realise it was fact.

Yup, he made 2 million dollars, which roughly equates to about £3.48p of our fine pound sterling. ;)

Hang on-I need to get Babel Fish to translate this.........Oh I see! I thought you were offering to sell me some cannabis or something :wink: Well, jolly splendid stuff!

I guess a similar strategy wouldn't work for Steve, Mikey?

I have never bought a Prince CD but I bought the paper for the new one and although it is obviously very good I don't really like the material that much.

Don't really know whether he is smart or not really? He wouldn't be in the position to release a free CD if he hadn't had deals (good or bad) in the past. He didn't get a global audience without the help of record companies in the first place did he? I was always of the opinion that most artists have to sell a small percentage of their soul to the devil in order to get somewhere so why do they turn around and say it's all unfair when they don't like what their record company expects of them. It's in the small print somewhere. Any artist can write songs and perform them in local bars and venues to fulfill their creative desires. If they decide they want to make a living at it and they are fortunate enough to be discovered they should think themselves lucky and be grateful they don't have to kiss arse all day in a regular day job! If the record companies make too much money for the artists liking it nobody's fault but the artist or their legal team for agreeing to it.
