I love the first three G3 DVD's. The reason each gig works so well imo is because the musicians balance each other out.

Joe's got the cool, bluesy, loose and screachy rock n' roll thing going on.. Yngwie is like a wild animal on stage  .. Petrucci's like a freaking machine (in a good way)..

But I think Steve really adds the uniqueness, depth, passion, romance, surreal and ethereal qualities that make the first current G3 dvd's much more than just shredding videos.

Besides, without Steve, who's going to make all those funny faces and do all of that incomprehensible guitar wizardry we're all so fond of :D?

I'd love to see T-mac, Marty Friedman or Zakk Wylde also headlining the event someday. T-mac always leaves me speechless.. such an incredible musician.

erm..have you ever seen ANY Paul Gilbert live or instructional videos? hell, because of him John Petrucci was actually a showman on this G3 tour instead of the stiff vegetable he usually is!

Haven't seen the Paul Gilbert vids yet yet, but I'll definately check them out.

Was Petrucci always so stiff (and/or shy?) on stage? I saw a few old pics of him I think with Marty Friedman or Jason Becker and he seemed a bit "livelier" with long hair.

I think he's just not much of an extrovert and people have probably been telling him for ages to make more of a show of things for the sake of the audience and that may be making him even more self-conscious. On the G3 DVD he seems to be trying to be more 'showy' a few times but it comes across a little uptight and then he falls back into just playing the song (which is fine and plenty, IMO).

At the end Mike Portnoy seems to give him a sort of friendly "See, that wasn't so bad" pat on the back. He must have been really nervous. First solo album, first solo 'tour' and then with Vai and Satch... Little did he know that it would be Satriani's Murphy's Law gig (bust string during 'Searching', bad/lost signal in the jam).

I'd love to see a DVD with Gilbert as well - I remember it was during one of these final songs my voice finally gave out... That was some great playing...

And I thought John was much more relaxed this tour...

John usually looks like that when he plays, whether it's with DT or on his own. The difference is that you rarely notice it with DT cos they have an obvious frontman (2 frontmen if you count Portnoy, haha)

The G3 DVD's are the best. I do hope they release one this time around.
