There's too many but I'll name one album from each of the 10 artists that I chose from the list of artists who have been immensly inspiring for me. There's so much more, but since you asked for 10... In no particular order...

Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Death - The Sound Of Perseverance
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction
Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Slayer - Reign In Blood
Stone - No Anaesthesia!
Mokoma - Kuoleman Laulukunnaat
Stam1na - Uudet Kymmenen Käskyä

Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Don't Break The Oath - Mercyful Fate
"Them" - King Diamond
Swansong - Carcass
Grin - Coroner
Horrorscope - Overkill
Metal Church - Metal Church
Natural Born Chaos - Soilwork
The Sound of Perseverance - Death
From Mars To Sirius - Gojira

Not necessarily the "greatest," just some favs. Don't really care for the lyrical content of Don't Break The Oath, but damn, the music on that one jams! :guitar :headbang :peace

all good stuff listed so far :) ^

I think Rust In Peace might work better as a choice for Megadeth, both both of those albums are great
and all the early Black Sabbath albums are pretty awesome as well, I don't think I could narrow down one
I haven't head Swansong but I've got Heartwork from Carcass, a kickass album
but ...And Justice For All would be my first choice for a Metallica album to put in such a list, Powerslave for Iron Maiden too

some of my favorites (or at least what I've been recently listening to whenever I feel the need for some metal):
Dio - Holy Diver
Opeth - Blackwater Park
In Flames - Colony
Mastodon - Leviathan
Danzig - Danzig
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
Strapping Young Lad - Strapping Young Lad
The Haunted - The Haunted
Arch Enemy - Burning Bridges

Opeth - Blackwater Park
In Flames - The Jester Race ~ Black Ash Inheritance
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Metallica - Kill 'em All
Motorhead - Bastards
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss

^ Those are a must have for all metal fans.

And some great albums by some of the newer bnds, these bands are pretty similar so if you like any album on that list just get the others as well.

Meshuggah - Catch 33
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
Behemoth - Zios Kia Cultus
Chimaira - Pass out of Existence
Dark Tranquility - Character ...(and Damage Done)

I have a very limited taste unfortunatly so I don't like a million of bands.

Angra - Temple of Shadows is prolly the metal album I love most though.

Nice to see Fredrik Thordendal's CD getting mention here.

Right now for me, my absolute fave metal CD is far and away Meshuggah's Catch 33. It's a fucking masterpiece.

Must also concur with those who have mentioned "Nothing" (8and the remix of that disc is a must), and "Natural Born Chaos"...

And how could we forget Strapping Young Lad's "Alien". I've also recently become very partial to the SYL album - especially from "Aftermath" thru to "Force Fed".

Rok,

Mikey :)

meshuggah new?? they're around since 91 or earlier. I wouldn't think mesh is similar to those other bands either. the only important thing is that they're awesome though. 8)

i think the best metal has been written by bands who didn´t even try to be metal! which means i´ll have to pick these two: anything by Racer X and Pantera(and Rhapsody). say what you will, but Dimebags music was always about jamming, not being metal and shoving it up posers asses.
also, i find it amusing how boring metal do they write in the 21st century.
