Making your own guitar strings
guitar strings really aren't that expensive, $3 each if you buy in bulk (those D'addario 10 packs that should last a few months)jemgirl wrote:after seeing this....i realize...strings are not that expencive.
but think about the poor bassists who pay $20 for just 4 strings !

bass strings cost more, but think about how much more material is used to make them. those things are massive. and you'll get 6 months minimum out of them. my buddy has had the same strings on one of his basses since the day he got about two years ago (except for one which broke).
I think there was once a rumour abot D'Addario and Ernie Ball being from the same factory but as far as I can tell, they're strings are nothing alike.Tommy wrote:Is it true that there's only like 4 string factories in the world?
but I'm pretty sure theres more than 4 factories out there

I guess it would be a real pain to make your own. I found the video from You tube to be very interesting. I wonder who invented the machines to bind & wind the strings, & how long have strings have been made like this?litlgrnman wrote:...would be a real pain in the ass.

What I would really like to see is how they made them back in the days before all the machines and automation.
Another thing that someone was telling me yesterday that I haven't had time to research so I thought I'd pose the vai.com forum brain trust. What was used to make the early violin strings? According to the someone I work with they used cat intestines!!
Please, someone tell me he is wrong!
