Does anybody know about the innovations with instruments, amps, and effects in the 80s? Obviously this was the decade for crazy hair metal with fast guitar players, pointy guitars, that kind of thing, but when was something like the floating whammy bar introduced, and what other things were either invented, at the time, or made popular by use of the hard rock and metal artists of the time? Do you know any books or internet resources that go into this kind of thing in detail? I'm only looking for info on the hard rock/metal of the 80's. I know a lot of Vai fans grew up in the 80's, so are very familiar with that decade, I'd appreciate any knowledge you could pass on to me. Thanks.

The floating tremolo has been around since the early fenders of the 50's(you can set them to float) but it wasn't until the late 70's that Floyd Rose came up with his now famous design that let you lock the nut and fine tune the bridge and be able to to huge whammy dives. of course it was made popular by Eddie Van Halen and a slew of others afterwards.
