I've always noticed this subconsciously, but you can DEFINATELY hear a bit of a GREAT satch song on the new Real Illusions:Reflections album. Here is it...

Play Freak Show Excess. Get to 2:51 in the song. The key is to listen to the piano in the background with the bass and the rhythm guitar. It's really prominent at 3:30 in the song. Listen until 3:41.

What song by Satch does that remind you of?

Answer:
Go to Joe Satriani, Crystal Planet (My favorite Satch album I might add.) Listen to With Jupiter in Mind. Hear it? If not, skip to 4:12 where it begins to become very promininet. This is the (almost) exact same rhythm except Vai is playing it faster.

Hear it? 8)

In the G3 live from Denver DVD(that must be purchased to be truly enjoyed) after Steve loses the 3 neck jem, the first song that he plays with EVO sounds like Satch to me. Though I have a hard time getting there cause' I have to watch satch at least a couple of times.

Really? Did you try it? It sounds like the rhythm section is playing almost the exact same chord progressions. I'm shocked! My tone deaf wife even noticed it when I played it for her last night!

your point?????????

there are so many songs out there today it would be almost impossible to make a total original sounding song. It's just a big coincidence

awwwwwwwwwwww, wow! Thanks for ruining it buddy! My point is these are my two favorite albums and i've made a connection sonically. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I think it's incredibly uh... incredible! Perhaps connections to different melodies is just something only a Dream Theater listener like myself can appreciate. Didn't realize it was too much for the Vai audience.

Bummed out by your lackluster response!

Well, there's this part at the very end of 'Die To Live' where Steve plays something which sounds very much like the melody of Satch's 'Summer Song'. Just a very short part - three or four notes, but they're definitely the same. I'm sure that's a little tip of the hat to Joe.

I'll check out the 'Freak Show Excess' thing as soon as I can.

Yeah, on one of Richie Sambora's songs off his Undiscovered Soul album he steals a Satch lick. Also in his song Harlem Rain he steals somthing from Jimmy Page. It is wierd the things you notice! :)

Asong in Akira Takasaki´s "Tusk of Jaguar" has a 99% exact version off the HOLY WARS song by Megadeth. Of course, TUSK of JAGUAR is from the 80s

For me there's a rhythm section in 80% of Satch's songs that sounds exactly like 80% of ZZ Top's riffs in their songs, but anyway....... LOL
