Permission to use a Vai song?

Hi, I'm a 20 year old Computer Engineering student and a huge Vai fan. To put myself through university I've written two books on making websites. I'm currently revising the first book (the basics, demos with a cheesy little personal homepage) and I'd like to include a little demo of my guitar playing on it. The clip I wanted to use was this one: http://www.exigence.net/media/demo1.mp3 which is basically a cover of Steve Vai's Carvin Legacy demo.

If I wanted to publish the book with a link to that sound clip, would there be any legal issues or strings attached? Or does anybody know who I should contact?

I think it's save to say that the music is copyrighted, so to officially publish a cover, you need permission.

But seems to me if you want to include your guitarplaying, you should play something of your own.. ;)
