It's interesting that so far almost everyone has a entirely different list :)
Probably because most of Steve's music is awesome!

Man, tough choice with so many, but...

#1 - The Riddle - probably an odd choice in some people's eyes, but there is SO much going on in this song it probably took me 50 listens to really catch it all. So much experimentation with the instruments in the background and so many layers to peel through. This is definitely a song for quality headphones to hear every little nuance.

#2 - For The Love of God - for pure epic intensity of monstrous proportions yet still accessible and attractive to "non-musician" types.

#3 - Tender Surrender - the sheer versatility of Vai's ability to move from soft sweeping moments of gentle finger plucking all the way to bone-cutting / heart-wrenching full-on lead attack, and even some of his "zany" whammy stylings without ever losing the focus of the tenderness of the song. Nobody can stop watching / listening once this song begins.

I don't think I can go past 3... there are too many that I love! But those really stand out to me.

No need to name any top five here. Electro-vai-ing man gives orchestral obsessions, endless leads, undulating riffs with a choreographed stature of Zappa that equates no other. This man is like no earthly moogis man.

Hmmn... only 5.?. Tough to decide...

Love Secrets has to be on my list. Rather like 80sDave said about The Riddle, I find Love Secrets an amazing piece that gives something new with each listen. There's a sort of intensely chaotic feel, yet through the chaos, there are patterns and a kind of powerful "cosmic beauty" (I can't think of a better term, here...) that resonates with me. I know it. Yet it's new to me. No matter how many times I listen, I still get chills.

Tender Surrender... Oh. My. Gods. Beautiful! I can't even begin to tell in mere words what that song does to me! Simply one of the most gorgeous things I've ever heard. It's mesmerizing. And really sexy, too. *blush!*

I'll Be Around. (*sigh*) One (of many...) that brings me to tears for the beauty of it. The lyrics alone are enough to melt anyone... but then the music... wow. It's like flight. I can't listen just once. I always hit the 'replay' button...

Whispering A Prayer *speechless*

Underground Garden or The Moon And I Oh, don't make me choose between them! Both of them get me, right in the Heart.

...

honourable mentions...

For The Love Of God Magnificent.

Firewall Epic. And ya' gotta love the "Boom-shika-boom..." opening it.!.

Voodoo Acid 'cause I love the way it messes with my head :D

Love Blood Awesome. 8)

...

And... well, everything else he's done!
