You cannot make them.
If they go into convulsions at the sound of anything that resembles real music, there is nothing you can do...

Invite those friends over, and have some of the good stuff ready to go!

My best friend in high school helped me broaden my musical horizons every time I would visit her. She'd have her favourites in the machine, and she'd play a few to see what I thought. If I liked what I heard, she'd tell me who it was, and tell me the titles of what she had just played. I ended up buying a ton of new stuff because of her. :)
We talked about the lyrics, we talked about the cool things that a particular musician did different than others, and sometimes we just sat and listened and enjoyed. :)

Live shows is the answer :)

When my little brother became 18 years old I took him into a Satch show even if he was never into the instrumental music but he enjoyed like the most. Then he has become not a big fan of instrumentals but of good rock music lover.

It is difficult to create Vai or Satch fans because It is very complicated music sometimes and if you're not a musician the thing is even more difficult in my opinion... But I think that some cool live shows can wake up something inside them!

the reason to why they won't start listen to vai is because it takes some serious listening time to listen to vai. they might just want to listen to a nice melody while they go to school when you listen deeper and that is very hard to change because i have the same problem.

Have them watch a DVD. Before they come over, pop one in and just let it play while you talk to them. Unlike music which they won't pay much attention to, they TV will draw their eyes like bugs to a porch light. I've done this several times in the past and it always has good results. The same songs they never paid attention to when they overheard my CDs they were watching and enjoying saying things like, "Holy shit that's awesome." They may not become fans but they will certainly be impressed.

tell them you have porn, invite them into your room, pop on Astoria DVD and run out and lock the door, unlock after aproxx 4 hours.

if there isn't a glowing Vai logo on their foreheads, it hasn't worked, start the DVD from the beginning and try again.

I'm deadly serious by the way.

It's a hard thing

1. You shouldn't start with real hard rock or heavy metal songs. You should start with easy rock songs (like some power ballads). Songs that I recomend: 1. Steve Vai - Firewall (Some kind of Rock/Pop song), 2. Steve Vai - For The Love Of God (Classic instrumental ballad), Bruce Dickinson - Tears Of The Dragon etc. But you shouldn't tell who is the autor of the song (I have a friend that said to me Iron Maiden is SHIT, but I roll some song of them and I didn't tell him that there were Iron Maiden on my iPod and he liked it).

2. Next time you roll heavier songs... I recomend DVDs either.

And if he likes it you've got him...

But remember that some people won't like it anyway...

That's my recept...

hmm..... change friends?

no, seriously... if they are into shakira music, and this kind of mainstream mindless stuff, wich is basically based on looks, it means their minds (or their criterion) are as substantial as corck... trying to open their ears or minds, will only end hurting you..

also steve vai is not for everybody, i know excellent melomans who enjoy music of the higest level, but that for some reason cannot stand the kind of information that steve vai delivers...

try showing em pink floyd's dark side of the moon.. it's a great beginnin into real music.. or perhaps bob marley

umm...did you know, that Steves music is just FREAK!!!!???????

I would never judge anyone who says it´s annoying . You know some people like cheese, others like wine, others like music. If you drink two diferent kinds of wine, you wouldn´t notice the difference. Therefore you hear big differences in music. Someone else may like the taste of different wines, but listens only to pop music.

The point is, if they´re not interested in music, they will only use it to get drunk...well, something like that
